sharpie markers on canvas

I finally tried out using Sharpies to draw/ paint on canvas. I had been wanting to try it out for a long time. I will have to say, that it was a different experience than I had expected. I know the canvas has a texture to it, but it had a very scratchy feel to it, and it was very slow. Painting would have been much faster, and easier to cover the canvas. I also thought that I would maybe have more control with the marker tip, but the canvas surface made it difficult, yet not impossible. The markers held up pretty well, but the green marker would not write afterwards. It was fun to try out a familiar drawing tool in an unusual way, so I’m glad that I gave it a try. I made a short video talking about the process.

A simple animation I created with Animation Creator HD for Apple iPad. I thought I would try out animating on the iPad. It is not as powerful as Flash or other animation software, but it is not bad for a version 1.0 program running on the iPad(there is also a version for the iPhone). I would like to see it have layers and a way to resize items, but it was easy and intuitive to use. Be warned that YouTube is sometimes stopping the animation before the circle erases itself completely. Have a wonderful day.

heavy rains and a paper boat

The spring rains have been heavy today. I thought about splashing in the puddles, but decided to make a paper boat and launch it in the over flowing water spills from the rain. Brings back childhood memories. Watch the maiden and final voyage of my paper boat. The boat’s name is from the Rush Hour 2 movie, when Chris Tucker’s character says he owns a yacht. I was just trying to make the most of the rain and have some fun.

Happy Earth Day 2009

I filmed this quick video to celebrate Earth Day and to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Tennessee weather today. The video was filmed in my front yard. The birds were singing and chirping their delight. I think that the birds have been into the whole “green” thing for some time now, but I will have my staff look into the data. The birds will be featured in my next illustration,as token of appreciation. I hope everyone has a wonderful day, and on a serious note, please take the time to think about ways to help out mother Earth.

Bic Mark-it Pen Review

I found this four pack of Bic Mark-it Permanent Markers at Target for only $2.99. I wanted to try them out and see how they compared to my last find, the Sharpie Writing Pen. I’m really glad that I decided to get the Ultra Fine size, rather than the Fine Point, because the tip was wider then I expected. One thing that I did not mention,in the video, is that the pen’s comfortable rubber grip made it very comfortable to hold and use. happy birthday dr. seuss

A time lapse drawing in honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. March 2, 2009, would have been Theodor Seuss Geisel’s 105th birthday. He was more commonly known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss. He published over 60 children’s books. I had the opportunity to go to a traveling art show on Dr. Seuss in Memphis several years ago, and was overwhelmed to see his original drawings, sculptures, and paintings in person. The show also featured his lesser known art from World War II, when he worked for the Army. It was still the same familiar style, with a very unfamiliar message. His style is unmistakable, and he has certainly been a huge influence on my own artistic style. Have a piece of cake and celebrate. If you close your eyes and use your imagination, I’m sure that you will find the Cat n the Hat, Horton, and maybe even a few Lorax enjoying some cake with you.

Here is my first, but certainly not last pen review. I saw this Sharpie Writing pen at the store and decided to give it a try. It said that it was permanent, no bleed, quick drying, acid free, water resistant, and could fight off aliens. Ok, they don’t claim any protection from aliens, but with the right imagination it might be better than nothing. I will have to say that for a very inexpensive pen (2 pack around $2.75) that I was impressed. It did not bleed into the paper, which scored major points with me. It is a nice pen to carry around with you so that your expensive drawing tools can stay home safe and sound. The video even shows one of my random doodles. Thanks for taking a look.

how to make hot chocolate

I’ve been trying to do something creative everyday. It was snowing this morning, so I went outside to take some pictures and video. Of course, I got cold and came back inside for some hot chocolate. Like any creative/teacher I documented the process. Final Cut Express was a little rusty, so it gave me a good excuse to work on my skills, along with some Photoshop. I also tested out my new MinoHD. It was a fun challenge.
